Prehistory on the Orkney Islands and Lewis

The Orkney Islands can be found above the most northern point of the Scottish mainland. Of the 200 islands there are only about 16 inhabited. A heavy storm revealed the Neolithic village of Skara Brae.

This was a very important discovery and the best preserved prehistoric village of Northern Europe with fire-places, beds and other interior fittings; they give an unparalleled glimpse of life as it was in Neolithic Orkney. In Maeshowe you can descend in the best preserved prehistoric tomb of Northern Europe. Everywhere on Orkney you can find mysterious five thousand year old standing stones.

On the island of Lewis you can find the Callanish Stones. The biggest prehistoric giant stone circle of Scotland. The site dates from 1800 BC.
