Every Scottish mountain with a minimum height of 900 meters or 2.952,76 feet is a Munro. In total there are 284 Munro’s and they have been mapped by Sir Hugh Munro in 1891. For the more experienced walker most of them are easy accessible. Nevertheless don’t forget suitable clothing. Being able to do some good map-reading is not an unnecessary luxury. You have to be prepared for the fact that you can witness four seasons in one day in the Scottish Highlands.
Below you can find some of the most well known Munro’s and also a list with links to a map on multimap.com
| BEN NEVIS
The highest mountain of Great Britain is in Scotland and is 1.343 meters high. A path of loose earth and rocks brings you to the top of the Nevis. Many will experience though that Ben Nevis is covered in mist most of the time. But if you’re lucky and the sun is shining, then you’ll have an astonishing view. Don’t forget to take warm clothing and a raincoat, mountaineering boots are also recommended.
BEN MACDUI
This mountain is the second highest mountain in Scotland. It is 1.309 meters high. Drive via Aviemore to the Cairngorm Ski car park. On the left side of the parking lot you will find a signpost that leads to the mountain. Also enjoy Lairig Ghru, a deep arroyo that cuts the Cairngorms in two.
| BEN CRUACHAN
This mountain massif has seven peaks of which the highest one is 1.224 meters high. From up here you have a beautiful view on Loch Awe and Loch Etive.
| THE FIVE SISTERS
In our personal opinion this is the most beautiful mountain chain in the Western Highlands. The road that leads up to it is already stunning. Take your time here. Certainly recommended for the more experienced walker or mountaineer. On the top you have a magnificent view of Loch Shiel. If you’re blessed with a sunny day, you can see the Cuillins on Skye from here. |
LIATHACH
Liathach is 1.053 meters high and is one of the most beautiful mountains of the Torridon mountain chain. This is a real challenge for the experienced mountaineer. This mountain is a massive block of red sandstone with a layer of white quartz on top of it. So this is not a mountain for beginners to climb and is certainly not suitable for walkers.
